Dental Hygienists

The primary role of our Dental Hygienists Joanna and Jill and Hygiene Therapists Kelly and Chloe is to provide preventative care and control of oral health to our patients. Ensuring that you have a stable and healthy mouth. Dental Hygiene

Keeping Your Smile Healthy and Bright

At Larkham House Dental Practice, our dental hygienists provide professional preventive care to keep your teeth and gums healthy, prevent disease, and help you maintain a confident smile. They work closely with our dentists to ensure every patient receives a tailored care plan.

What is dental hygiene and why is it important?

Good dental hygiene is proven to be one of the most important ways of preventing long term dental problems. Dental hygiene involves the health of your teeth, gums, and mouth and can even extend to your throat. Poor oral hygiene can lead to not only embarrassing symptoms which would interfere with your social life, making it difficult to eat and speak but serious conditions, affecting your overall health. So, maintaining good dental hygiene is critical.

Poor oral hygiene can cause:

  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • The build-up of visible plaque and tartar
  • Stained teeth
  • Red, swollen or bleeding gums
  • Receding gums
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Pain when eating
  • Tooth decay
  • Loose teeth and even tooth loss
  • Dental abscesses

As part of our professional dental team, all our dental hygienists and hygiene therapists work hand in hand with our dentists offering expert advice and support to all our patients.

Hygiene

What Does a Dental Hygienist Do?

Our hygienists offer a wide range of treatments, including:

hygiene SCALING
Airflow

Remove plaque and tartar buildup for cleaner, healthier teeth.

Gentle, effective removal of stains and biofilm.

Fluoride

Strengthen enamel and prevent cavities.

OHI hygiene

Oral cancer hygiene

Check for any unusual lesions to detect oral cancer early.

Our hygienists focus on preventive care, ensuring your teeth and gums stay strong for years to come.

Dental Hygiene and Gum Disease

Poor oral hygiene can lead to the mouth becoming a bacterial breeding ground and, if neglected or oral hygiene is ignored, it can lead to gum disease (also known as periodontal disease or periodontitis).

Bacteria associated with periodontitis can enter the bloodstream via bleeding gums and have been linked to the following conditions:

  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • Strokes
  • Generalised inflammation
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Lung disease
  • Erectile Dysfunction

Direct Access to hygiene

After changes in dental legislation, ‘Direct Access’ means our fully trained and competent dental hygienists and dental therapists can see you without first having to see a dentist for a referral. So, you don’t need to be referred by your dentist, have a dentist’s prescription or even be registered with Larkham House Dental Practice.

FAQ

Do I Need a Referral?

No referral is required. You can book directly with one of our dental hygienists, making it easy to maintain your oral health on a regular basis.

How Often Should I Visit a Hygienist?

The frequency depends on your individual needs:

  • Most patients benefit from visits every 6–12 months.

  • Patients with gum disease or other conditions may require more frequent visits.

Your hygienist will create a plan tailored to your oral health.

Is Treatment Painful?

Most patients find cleaning and scaling comfortable. For those with sensitivity, our hygienists can use numbing gels or local aesthetic to ensure a pain-free experience.

What is Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT)?

GBT is a modern, gentle cleaning technique that removes biofilm, plaque, and stains efficiently using a controlled stream of water, air, and fine powder. It’s faster, more comfortable, and highly effective compared to traditional methods.

Can Hygienists Prescribe Treatments?

While hygienists cannot prescribe medication, they play a vital role in assessing oral health and working with dentists to plan treatment when issues are detected.
