IV sedation, short for intravenous sedation, involves the administration of sedative medication directly into the bloodstream to help patients relax during dental procedures. Unlike general anesthesia, patients remain conscious but feel deeply relaxed and may not remember much of the procedure afterward. It is ideal for those who experience severe dental anxiety, have a low pain threshold, or require extensive or complex dental treatments.
Administered by a Consultant Anaesthetist , the sedation process is closely monitored to ensure both safety and comfort throughout the procedure. This level of expertise ensures that the sedation is tailored to the patient’s needs, minimizing discomfort while maintaining control over the level of consciousness.

For patients at Larkham House Dental Practice who may benefit from IV sedation, we’ve made the referral process straight forward and efficient. Your dentist can refer by submitting a referral form on Abbey Mead Dental & Implant Clinic’s website.
Once referred, you will be invited to visit Abbey Mead Dental & Implant Clinic in Tavistock for a consultation. Then one of our Consultant Anaesthetists will assess to determine if IV sedation is appropriate. Throughout your care, we will keep you fully informed. Once treatment is completed, you will return to Larkham House for continued dental care with all necessary updates provided.
