Why are lips so important and what makes them unique ?

Our lips grow thinner as you grow old. This happens with ageing, the collagen production of body decreases which is a vital protein and one of its functions is to give shape to the lips. Reduced production of collagen implies that lips start losing their plumpness.

  1. Using our lips to suck is one of the very first skills we have after we’re born, it’s the sucking reflex combined with another primitive response, the rooting reflex, that allows infants to breastfeed.
  2. Lips are unique like fingerprints, you will never find to individuals with identical lip impressions.
  3. When it comes to attracting the opposite sex, big lips are better, the BBC reported. That is, at least where a woman’s lips are concerned. But women seem to prefer men with medium-sized lips, a University of Louisville psychologist told the BBC in 2003.
  4. Lips are one of the most sensitive organs in human body, with more than a million nerve endings but do not have any kind of defensive membrane for protection.
  5. Our lips appear red-pink because we can actually see the blood capillaries that lie under the mucus membrane which is slightly transparent, with only 3 to 6 layers of cells compared to 16 layers found in other parts of the skin.
  6. Lips lack natural protective oil, with no sweat glands or oil leaves lips vulnerable and highly exposed to cold, wind and sun.
  7. Lip cancer is more prevalent in men than in women as men usually don’t use lip balms or lipsticks which often protect lips from harmful UV rays.
